Laser Cladding (LPW) of Tribaloy® T-800

The Tribaloy® family of alloys are a very unique group of hard surfacing alloys that offer resistance to wear and galling, at the same time maintaining a high corrosion resistance.  Being well known for their ability to perform in high temperature applications as well as areas where lubrication is a problem.  These attributes come from the formation of a hard intermetallic (Laves) phase as these materials are applied. With the application via the LPW process it has been found that this hard intermetallic phase is being formed more consistently and at a much finer grain size than what has been found in other conventional welding processes.

There are three alloys in this family of alloys:

Alloy T-400 (cobalt based) – Combines excellent mechanical wear resistance with good corrosion resistance   Rc hardness 48-54

Alloy T-700® (nickel based) - T-700 contains a higher chromium content than T-400 lending itself well to applications where protection from oxidation and increased corrosion resistance is needed.  Being a nickel based alloy also makes it a prime candidate for nuclear applications as a replacement for Co-Cr-W alloys.

Alloy T-800 (cobalt based) - Also has a higher chromium content  than the other two alloys offering even a higher level of oxidation and corrosion resistance.  Alloy T-800 stands head and shoulders above other cladding materials when it comes to elevated temperature and lubrication starved applications.

Some applications in which these alloys are well suited would be:

    Thermowells

    Bearing Journals or Sleeves

    Camshafts

    Pump Compressor Components

    Seals and Seal areas

    Valve trim of all types

    Plastic extrusion components

Tribaloy® T800 Two Layer thick deposit via Laser
