THERMAL SPRAY DIAGNOSTICS - Part II - Who and How are they being used?

The first part of FWG’s blog on thermal spray diagnostics [i] revealed that Tecnar Automation Ltd. (http://www.tecnar.com/) in St-Bruno, Quebec, Canada, has been and continues to be leader in developing & manufacturing of advanced diagnostic equipment for thermal spray technology.  Over the more than twenty years since their existence, they have served the needs of numerous clients in both industrial and research institutions.  Luc Pouliot, VP of Operations, has graciously provided some insight into Tecnar’s contributions to thermal spray diagnostics.

Tecnar has served numerous industrial clients mainly in aircraft/aerospace and power generation, but also in printing roll, automotive, tool blades and biomedical industries (non-exhaustive list).  They have also provided hardware and support to research organizations such as universities, national laboratories, and corporate research centers.  As far as how their diagnostic equipments are being used in the two market segments, industrial clients seem to use them for the following:

• process monitoring & control (ensuring same material state run after run)
• trouble shooting
• parameters development
• parameters transfer (booth to booth)
• reduction of number of coupons
• validation of new powder lots
• gun validation after electrode change or rework

Research organizations use them primarily for:

• modeling
• fundamental process understanding
• equipment (for instance spray gun) design & optimization
• parameters development

Regarding market projections, Luc has indicated that the research segment was the first available market opening for sensors nearly two decades ago, and that given its size, no one is surprised  that it is saturating now.  Most of the present & future market lies with the industrial customers. “The number of production spray booths around the world is in thousands, whereas to date, only a few hundred are equipped with sensors for day-to-day operations.”

Although on-going development projects are confidential, Tecnar’s impressive record of launching a new product or disclosing improvements to existing products annually, for each of the past 15 years is an indication that their advancements in this area of work will continue for thermal sprayers to benefit from.  The author would like to thank Tecnar and Luc Pouliot for their input.
